At Carbon Re, we’re on a mission to cut gigatonnes of carbon emissions from the world’s biggest emitting industries (like Cement, steel and glass), by applying cutting-edge AI where it matters most.

We’re a small and growing team of scientists, engineers, strategic thinkers, and implementers who care deeply about impact and believe in getting there with good humour and a healthy dose of urgency. Our first SaaS product helps cement producers optimise their operations in real time, cutting costs and carbon today while building foundational AI for the next industrial revolution.

With Carbon Re, you’ll do something that actually helps the planet. Not a bad way to invest your career.

About the role

We seek a Solutions Engineer to join our Product and Solutions Engineering team and sit on the frontline of climate and industry. This role combines hands-on software engineering, deployment, and integration with the ability to work closely with process engineers in cement plants to deliver measurable results.

Think of it as the process engineer’s best friend — trusted, collaborative, and technical. You’ll directly deploy Carbon Re’s AI products into plant systems, build integrations, analyse data, and ensure our solutions drive real-world cost and carbon reductions.

Over time, you’ll help us evolve our deployment playbooks and shape the product, building the foundation for scaling across industries.

We don’t draw a specific line between engineering and research teams. We operate as one cohesive unit, sharing tech stack, knowledge, and objectives. Our focus spans from fundamental ML research to commercial-grade software development, offering diverse learning and impact opportunities.

Your main responsibilities

  • Deploy & integrate Carbon Re AI into live cement plants.

  • Write and extend production-level software and deployment-specific integrations (APC, PLC, data historian, IT systems).

  • Build trust with process engineers and plant teams, explaining technical decisions clearly and aligning solutions to operational needs.

  • Analyse plant data to identify optimisation opportunities and validate product performance.

  • Act as a feedback loop into Carbon Re’s product and ML teams, sharing insights from real-world deployments to drive roadmap evolution.

  • Create and refine control strategy templates and deployment playbooks, helping make integrations faster, safer, and more repeatable.

  • Travel to plants (~1 week per month) to be hands-on during deployment, testing, and tuning.

What a great fit looks like

  • Strong software engineering skills (Python preferred), with comfort writing robust, production-grade code.

  • Exposure to physical sciences, controls, or heavy industry (Cement, steel, energy, manufacturing, or similar).

  • Ability to engage directly with plant teams, especially process and automation engineers, building trust and translating needs into solutions.

  • Hacker mindset: scrappy, resourceful, comfortable solving problems in ambiguous, real-world environments.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to dig into industrial data sets and extract actionable insights.

  • Autonomy and initiative: capable of owning deployments end-to-end.

  • Willingness to travel regularly (up to ~25%).

You’ll excel if

  • You take ownership: you thrive when you’re given full responsibility for projects and see them through end-to-end.

  • You’re independent: you don’t wait for instructions — you spot problems and act decisively to solve them.

  • You’re a natural hacker: you love building quick, practical solutions in messy environments and iterating until they’re robust.

  • You build trust easily: you can connect with plant engineers, listen deeply, and align solutions to their priorities.

  • You’re curious and analytical: dive into complex processes and data, hunting for insights and improvements.

  • You’re a strong communicator. You can explain technical ideas clearly to engineers on the plant floor and stakeholders in the boardroom.

  • You thrive in dynamic environments: fast-paced, ambiguous settings excite you, and you’re motivated by high-impact, mission-driven work.

Success in This Role Means

  • Plants see clear performance improvements — lower costs, reduced CO₂, improved stability.

  • Process engineers trust and rely on you as a partner in solving problems.

  • Deployments become repeatable and scalable thanks to your technical contributions and playbooks.

  • You help shape Carbon Re’s product, pushing it from code-heavy to configurable and scalable.

You are not expected to check every box, and we’d love to hear from you even if your experience isn’t an exact match.

We’re building a team that reflects the world we want to change. Our people come from all walks of life - different countries, cultures and experiences - and we think that’s one of our biggest strengths. We’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels safe, respected and celebrated. No matter your background, if you’re excited by what we do, we want to hear from you.

In return for your hard work, we’ll give you

  • 💸 A competitive salary

    60,000 to 80,000

  • 📈 Equity in the company

When we win, you win. You’ll get share options, so you can be part of our journey from the inside.

  • 🕰️ Flexible working

We’re planning for the future in more ways than one.

The interview process

  • A screening call for 30 minutes to understand your motivations for applying for the role

  • Technical Interview 1: Data Analysis & Solution Design: Analyse a simplified plant dataset to uncover drivers of instability and sketch how you’d turn the findings into a solution.

  • Technical Interview 2: Cement Process Optimisation: Work through a kiln optimisation scenario, balancing process stability, clinker quality, fuel use, and emissions to recommend an operating strategy.

  • An operating principles discussion to establish your fit with the way that we work at Carbon Re

  • A final call with our CEO

We believe hiring is a two-way process. Just as we’ll reference-check candidates before making a final offer, we encourage you to reference-check us by chatting with team members you haven’t yet met. Ask anything. We’ll answer with Concrete Honestly.

Once the interviews are over, we’ll quickly make a decision, and we’re always happy to give feedback at any stage.
