Carbon Re is an AI research and development company dedicated to significantly reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. We are focused on the energy-intensive manufacturing industries like cement, steel, and glass, which are responsible for approximately 20% of global emissions. They are referred to as ‘hard-to-abate industries’ for which there is currently no viable path to decarbonisation.

Our mission is to build tools that can enable rapid decarbonisation of these industries. Currently, that means that our focus is create a control system for plants that can optimally reduce CO2 emissions. Doing so enables to make immediate impact, while setting us up for redesigning these manufacturing systems for net-zero, and eventually develop climate-friendly materials and processes.

About this role

As a Lead Machine Learning Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our ML technologies and strategies. You will be a technical leader responsible for driving innovation, establishing best practices, and mentoring engineers across the organisation. You will also collaborate closely with the product and leadership teams, and execute on high-impact projects that support Carbon Re's mission and growth. This role is roughly equivalent to staff+ IC roles at other tech companies.

You will take on a significant role in the development of our product, guiding and mentoring other team members, and improving our internal processes to obtain a multiplier impact across the organisation. You will have a vital part in defining your role and day-to-day work.

You will be responsible for the design and implementation of robust, maintainable, and scalable machine learning systems. You will be managing competing requirements and deadlines in an early startup environment, and helping set strategic priorities to deliver on our ambitious long-term vision for products and solutions that have a substantial impact on carbon emissions and drive the growth of the company.

You will also contribute to our fear-free development process by writing tooling to help the team move faster and more sustainably. You will be supported by continuous builds, tests, a constructive review system, and a strong culture of improving engineering processes.

You will have great opportunities to mentor a growing team of engineers and scientists, and be supported in growing as a technical leader, as well as learning about the complex physical and chemical processes that govern heavy industry processes.

About you

You will thrive in this role if you:

  • Are passionate about making a positive impact on climate change mitigation and possess a strong interest in our mission.

  • Have a proven track record of technical leadership in the field of machine learning, with extensive experience in developing and deploying ML-based products.

  • Possess excellent mentoring and team-building skills, with experience in growing and leading engineering teams.

  • Are familiar with a wide range of ML techniques, with strong foundational ML knowledge as well as deep expertise in one (or more) subfield of modern machine learning.

  • Are proficient in Python and its ML ecosystem, and have solid experience using frameworks such as PyTorch or Jax.

  • Have experience working in a scientific environment across disciplines (particularly physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering).

  • Have a solid understanding of modern cloud compute infrastructure, and experience in working with AWS, GCP, Azure, and other vendors.

  • Are determined to drive strategic decision-making and prioritise projects based on internal and external impact.

Note that if you don’t meet all of these qualifications, you should still consider applying. We are building a diverse company with people coming from all sorts of backgrounds and with different skill sets.

More about Carbon Re

We don’t draw a specific line between engineering and research teams. We operate as one cohesive unit, sharing tech stack, knowledge, and objectives. Our focus spans fundamental ML research to commercial-grade software development, offering diverse learning and impact opportunities.

Immediate action for long-term impact. Due to the cumulative radiative forcing effect, one tonne of carbon saved today will help us meet global temperature targets as much as two tonnes saved in 2050. Immediate carbon reduction has a more profound effect on global temperature goals than future efforts. Our solutions prioritize immediate operational improvements for significant climate impact. We understand the urgency of now.

We value diversity, equity, and inclusivity. With a diverse range of nationalities and a range of backgrounds represented in our small team, we are building an inclusive environment where our people can bring their authentic selves to work, be respected for who they are and the exceptional work they do. We welcome and actively encourage applications from all sections of society and are committed to offering equal employment opportunities regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, parental status, disability, age, citizenship, or any other basis. We see our diversity as an asset as we tackle challenging problems through technology.
